Reflections from a Silver Circle
Crisis as a Creative Process

The ART of pursuing Possibility on the way to Total Paralysis

By R. W. Bill Miller

This is a one hour live presentation centered around a PowerPoint show, containing over 200 original visuals, by AT artist/writer Bill Miller.  The combination of the visuals and live commentary illustrate the life changing potential of Assistant Technology from the consumer's point of view.

"Reflections" will have direct application for persons with disabilities, their caregivers, educators, rehabilitation practitioners and technology providers.  It will also have universal application as an inspirational/motivational tool especially for anyone experiencing what seems to be an insurmountable challenge or knows someone who is.

By illustrating the miraculous possibilities presented by the Computer and specifically Assistive Technology it will show that there are avenues of communication and creativity where none was ever thought possible.

The author is available for conferences, meetings or workshops and can be contacted at Bill@theartmiller.ab.ca for presentation dates in times.

DEDICATION

To "The Amazing Lady Evelyn" who constantly teaches me about life, creates endless Tomorrows and whose limitless ability to care empowers me to unimaginable accomplishments that only very special Angels can provide.

To Randy Marsden whose caring spirit and engineering genius have allowed me, despite my continuing advance toward total paralysis, to continue to create and participate in Realities that are even bigger than my dreams.

FORWARD

"Be bold when you embark for strange places.
Don't leave anything of yourself on shore.

Have the nerve to go into unexplored territory.
Be brave enough to live life creatively.
The creative is a place where no one else has been.

You have to leave the city of your comfort and go
to the wilderness of your intuition.
You can't get there by bus, only by hard-work and risk
and by not quite knowing what your doing.

What you'll discover is wonderful...
What you'll discover is yourself".

INTRODUCTION

The Art of Creating Possibility on the way to Total Paralysis

I know.  I know.  How can you use the words Art and creating opportunity in the same sentence as total paralysis?  The Chinese symbol for Crisis above is actually composed of two characters, Danger and Opportunity.   We can choose to look at Crisis several ways.  Of course it comes with an element of Danger but it doesn`t have to become all encompassing disaster.  With Crisis comes change and with change comes Opportunity. The human spirit, left to it self, will try to overcome any event involving crisis.  What you are about to read and see is definitely about Crisis as a Creative Process

This book is an attempt to present a story of what the author describes as a series of lifetimes. Some of them before the onset of his Multiple Sclerosis and those after. His before stories center on the physical world. The after may be even more successful and dynamic, but differently centered.  This new series of lifetimes evolve from an unremitting and continual progression toward the author`s almost complete paralysis.

As the physical body declines, what emerges is a revelation of astounding proportions spiritually, artistically and personally. The movement toward self-understanding and the growth of self-esteem replaces the physical focus of life in a world of diminished movement and sensation. Through a series of what the author calls "almost guided experiences and interactions", with a never-ending number of people,  Bill is allowed to discover, learn and accomplish continually.

This story is also very much about Art.  Not just art as a medium, or the result of technology or even of the miracle of just being able to create, but about all these concepts and more. Its also about the miraculous ability of artistic expression to help the individual triumph over adversity. Creativity can play a tremendous role as a motivator, in providing a sense of accomplishment and in finding one's artistic and human self.

Within this story are excellent examples of healing oneself by giving to others and definitely of the power of the human spirit. Most of all, it is a story about people because without the contribution of a continuous flow of caring and concerned people this story doesn't exist.
